THIS IS A THEME PARK
THIS IS ACTUALLY A BANANA AND A VERY BIG ONE
Wild on Camera
Alastair presents Musa ingens (giant banana) - the largest banana in the world - encountered during a July 2016 expedition to New Guinea, the only place where it occurs. Mature plants of this species stand at over 15 metres in height and over 1 metre in circumfere
nce. The largest specimens may approach 2 metres in circumference, dwarfing all other species of banana by some way.
Even so, whilst certainly the biggest banana species, the fruits of this banana are relatively small (see video) and contain large black seeds and little edible pulp. In fact, the giant fruits shown in some videos and web pages that are claimed to come from this plant are not Musa ingens at all, but giant plantains, hybrid bananas bred for cooking.
